Patriot Pen Essay Contest

7th and 8th Grade

November 08, 2009

Every year the VFW hosts an essay contest for grades 6 through 8.  “The competition consists of four levels.  The first level is sponsored by local VFW Posts.  Post winners advance to the VFW District (Regional) level where the one first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (State) level. The one first place winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW National competition.  The winner from each state then competes for national prizes” (VFW).

This year’s theme is “When is the right time to honor out military heroes?

In order for us to decide who goes on to the local competition in Emporia, all essays submitted by the 7th and 8th grade classes were read by 3 local readers.  The essays are scored and tallied to determine a winner.

This year we have a tie for first place:  Cassidy Barnard and Tristan Brandt.  They will advance on to the local competition in Emporia.  Good luck Cassidy and Tristan!

Runners-up are Samantha Bond and Aubrey Pyle.  Honorable Mentions are:  Kadin Anliker, Bryan Fankhauser, Sam Davis, Taylor Cox, Katie Gehring, Braden Livers and Owen Reed.
